Created for “Afternoon Tea” exhibition, Chiara Williams Contemporary Art, Margate 2017

Following on from recent work which examined Kintsukuroi (the japanese art of mending pottery with gold), I was interested in expanding the theme to changes in the real world.

Margate is in the process of change. For some this is a positive, for others the influx of artists, weekend visitors, DfLs and “hipsters” is not welcome.

Kintsugi (or Kintsukuroi) is also associated with an area of Zen philosophy, Mushin no shin (mind without mind) which contemplates change as neither good nor bad, but just that it is, and can be observed without judgement.

Whether you approve or disapprove of regeneration/hipsterisation of Margate, you cannot argue that the changes are very very interesting.
